The English in Southeast Asia (ESEA) conference series began in 1996 as a collaboration between the National Institute of Education, University of Malaya, and Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Since then, the conference consortium has expanded to include more educational institutions in Southeast Asia, as well as in the Asia Pacific. These institutions include the following:

The last ESEA conference in 2022 was in digital format, co-organized by the Ateneo de Manila University and conducted jointly with the Linguistic Society of the Philippines (LSP) International Conference. A total of 369 participants joined the event.
