Professor Li Wei is Director and Dean of the UCL Institute of Education and Professor of Applied Linguistics at University College London. He is Fellow of the British Academy, Academia Europaea, Academy of Social Sciences and Royal Society of Arts. He is Editor of International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism and Applied Linguistics Review, among others.
This talk will review the need for decolonising English Language Teaching, with specific reference to the Global South contexts and the argument, and evidence, of Unequal Englishes (Tupas, 2015). It will explore how Translanguaging, especially Translanguaging Pedagogy (cf. pedagogical translanguaging), can contribute to making the decolonising ELT project work in practice, with fundamental implications for policy and planning.
